It's not the mesh I think. The model has wonky collision checks and does some weird stuff when it parses collision, especially with BSP level. I looked some years back at converting AS maps to MH using a mutator and spawning monsters in via the pathnoding but as you can see the AS maps are a fucking mess. I tested the tagz mod out to several hundred tags in player view without a performance hit. It won't be an issue.

To be fair the credit should be passed on to Casey at Old Unreal for showing me how to fix that orientation issue. That guy is amazing.
